Daffodils and Leeks for Eisteddfod

We have be helping busy Mum, Clare Thomas on Google+ with craft ideas for her children's Eisteddfod in school.
Clare needed to know how she could help her children make a model daffodil and leek. We discussed many ideas including:

For the daffodil - 
- an egg box segment for the trumpet
- yellow card for the daffodil petals
- green pipe cleaners, lolly sticks (either round or flat) for the stem
- paper leaves either sugar paper or card
For the leek-
-kitchen roll covered in crepe paper,
-for the bulbous leek base build up with tissue and plenty of glue
-for the roots - string, wool, thin fabric strips

After much thought and input from her children, Clare decided to make the daffodil and leek from paper mache and lots of paint to the delight of her little daughter. Don't they look just great?

They had worked together to decide what would be the best materials to use and how to use them. Their art work is their own and her two children have gone to school today feeling very proud of their art work and themselves.

Eiseddfod is celebrated in Wales around St David's Day, March 1st. Schools in Wales spend time learning about Welsh customs and culture during this time.
Children all ages participate. Clare has two young children at primary school and  is the company director of The Character Place, selling children's home ware character products.

Making Quiet Critters

Today we have been making critters out of craft pom poms. Have you heard about pom pom critters? So useful if you need to keep children quiet, for whatever the reason. We used glitter pom poms as they look like they have spiky hair all over them, due to their metallic strands. We think they look rather cool! Homemade Quiet Critters Pom pom critters can be used by teachers, in the classroom, or at home to help with behaviour management. They are named 'Quiet Critters' in this instance. For a teaching method of keeping the children quiet and on task, this can work really well. The idea being that all the creatures live in a soundproof container as they don't like to hear a lot of noise. If a child is quiet, they get the chance to look after a critter. Embroidery Stitches for Children

Some simple embroidery stitches that children can learn to do themselves, many of which are variations of one type of simple stitch. Embroidery Stitches for Children The stitches here are purely based on a running stitch (up one hole, down the next)  or a cross stitch (up one then diagonally down one). Depending on the direction, or the angle of the needle, variations can be sewn. Teaching children to thread a needle if your child is right handed, (reverse for left handed), bring one end of the thread round until it meets the other thread, forming a loop and hold in your left hand. Hold tightly between your thumb and finger, insert the  needle into the little loop, eye first, and pull tightly away from the thread to make the loop firmer.
